was on a phone call with my Kompakt and since I’ve hung up it’s completely locked up. I just see the little lock logo but when i push the button nothing happens. When I hold the button nothing happens. So…am I screwed? or anything to do?
someone called me and it snapped the phone out of it. perhaps someone else has had this issue?
@miguelnewzealand Interesting observation. Thank you for the feedback. I will ask the team about this.
@miguelnewzealand Our team asked if you could answer these questions (you can DM them to me if you feel better)
Questions to the user
- Can you provide estimated time when it happened? And also your time zone set on the device.
- In what state phone was when you answered a call? Some specific app? Locked?
- Do you use some sideloaded apps? If yes - please list all of them
- Was the contact in your Contacts book or no?
- Was the contact listed in your Favorites in Contacts?
- Do you use SIM or eSIM? Dual SIM or Single-SIM?
- What is your Carrier / Carriers ?
- It happened at 10:55am in Wellington NZ
- My phone was just in a locked state when he called me on my US SIM.
- Whatsapp, Pocket Casts, Quik messaging, Kobo Books, InkOS. That’s it.
- My friend called me on my main SIM number from the states. (I have dual SIM). I called him back on Whatsapp. It was after we hung up this Whatsapp call that it locked up.
- The friend who called me is in my contacts (not a favorites), but his name didn’t show up weirdly. After we finished the call on Whatsapp and it was locked up, I made my coworker call me on my NZ number to snap the phone out of it, (he is in my contacts).
6 and 7. Dual physical sim, one from tmobile in the US, one from Contact Mobile / vodophone in NZ. Again this began on the US number and then the lock out happened after we hung up whatsapp
@miguelnewzealand Thank you for providing this info so quickly. I have passed it on to the team & they are looking into it.
@miguelnewzealand Our engineering team has investigated these reports and identified a specific issue that causes the phone’s operating system to crash.
What is happening? The crash occurs when a sideloaded application (such as WhatsApp, Quik, or another third-party messenger) is set as the default Phone or SMS application on the device.
When this happens, the system returns an error saying “Caller must be system, default dialer or default SMS app,” and freezes or crashes.
Why is this happening? Mudita OS is a unique, minimalist version of Android. To enhance privacy, security, and simplicity, we have intentionally removed a significant amount of standard code.
A consequence of this is that our OS requires the built-in Phone and Messages applications to handle their core functions. It is not designed to safely hand over these critical system permissions to third-party apps.
The Solution and a Temporary Workaround
The good news is that our team has already developed a solution. We have improved how Mudita OS handles these permission requests to prevent system instability. This fix will be included in the upcoming Mudita OS K 1.3.0 software update.
In the meantime, to ensure your device remains stable, please follow this workaround:
- Do not set any sideloaded application as your default for phone calls or SMS messages.
- Please continue to use the native, pre-installed Phone and Messages apps for these functions.
- Because sideloaded app has now a priority - you will need to use
adbcommands to change the default calling app or factory reset the device.
We understand that some third-party apps require being set as the default to work correctly. Unfortunately, until the MuditaOS K 1.3.0 update is released (next month), using these apps may not be possible without causing instability.
We sincerely apologize for the frustration and inconvenience this issue has caused. We are working to get the K 1.3.0 update released as soon as possible.
hmmm. interesting, thanks for that. well, i don’t have whatsapp set as the default as far as I know. And for now, it’s only happened one time. Hopefully I’ll just coast on through to the update…
@urszula this happened again. Was listening to a podcast and this time got a regular phone call and when we hung up my phone was locked up. The little lock icon doesn’t work. I can’t long press and restart. The only thing that fixes it is to have someone call me and it wakes up. Just letting ya’ll know.
@miguelnewzealand I’ve asked my team about this.
