Thought this might be interesting for people on this forum.
I just discovered that the latest version of Grid E2E location sharing now seems to work on the Mudita Kompakt.
I’m not affiliated in any way but as my kids both have Mudita Kompakt phones I was looking for a way of sharing location within my family in a privacy preserving way.
The app allows cross-platform (between IOS and Android) E2E location sharing without having to sign up with email or SMS.
Live360, another similar service that many of my friends use, was recently found guilty of selling on location information. With Grid this shouldn’t be possible as even the platform doesn’t have access to your location.
Previously Grid only allowed sign-up with passkeys which are not supported on Mudita but they’ve just added support for user/password sign-up. (although beware there’s no password reset function in case you forget your password!)
I’m just testing it right now (2 x iPhones + 2 x Mudita) so can’t yet confirm how effective it is or whether it has any major flaws , but it seems to do the basics. Will report back in a couple of weeks.
It’s available from Aurora but I think this won’t work on MK as it requires Google Play Services. The APK direct from the developer’s GitHub releases page works on MK and is not dependent on Google play services.
Understandable it might be a leap of faith for some people installing this kind of software from a relatively unknown developer.
If there’s anyone who has more info about the developer or is able to compile and run from source, that would at least be a useful next step.
