Laptop Addiction

I don’t have that issue even though the first days my experience was similar. I’ve started to be more present with my family in conversations and activities, I read way more books than ever before, build LEGO sometimes  and I’m more active now (running and cycling). So my recommendation is that you try to start such activities and especially when your brain tries to glue you to just another screen. Of course meditation, relaxation and naps in between are always good as well. I feel way more relieved than ever before since I slowed down and took that stress out of my live.

Good luck on your journey. Keep on it and the reward will be tremendous. Promise. My life changed completely during the last four weeks since I’ve started to be more mindful thanks to my Kompakt, Element and Harmony 2.

How did you open the PDF ? I had to sideload MuPDF to open one myself.

You have to have rules around your laptop. When you are not using it put it in another room like the basement, don’t have it on your person when watching tv etv, keep it literally in another room

I live in a studio apartment. Everything is in one space and I am a full time student who uses her laptop on a consistent basis.

You know what might be a really nice addition to the Mudita software. A simple code / ticket application. A space where we can save QR codes to, or ticket PDFs and tag them with some name and date for use and mark used or archive once we’ve used them, and/or have a section for card QRs.

We can upload them as files or photos sure, but its unorganised and not quick to use

ah that will be a problem then, have you tried the freedom app? It looks you out of your laptop for designated periods

@ploum All PDFs can be opened in the eReader app.

I’m using Tresorit to access my files in the “cloud” (I hate this use of the word) and I was not able to open a PDF, Tresorit didn’t find an app.

But that’s not a problem. Mupdf is free software, lightweight and with all required features.

I have a desktop, not a laptop and maybe i’ve seen a little uptick in using it - however I’ve blocked the newsfeeds of social media on it (except bluesky which is fairly boring compared to picture based stuff), which has been massively helpful. I also only use my computer between work hrs (9-6) and even though I work from home I have it in my studio so once it’s off I don’t go back there.

If I find myself checking it a lot during working then I will turn it off (unless i’m working ON it obviously). I am an artist so i am not having to be on it all the time thankfully.

The key to changing a habit is to replace the habit. I highly recommend ‘The Power Of Habit’ book. It’s fascinating, i’m half way through it currently.

I don’t have a mudita yet but it’s my next step. I’ve had SM deleted from my phone for 6+months now and my screen time has gone down massively even though it’s still a smartphone (an iphone 13 mini i got second hand to replace my massive iphone!).

Speaking of myself, I came to the realisation that my addiction was to the constant connection.
It took me years, but I developed a system to overcome that.

  1. I disable Wifi in the BIOS of my laptop and only connect through a RJ-45 cable which is not on my desk but somewhere where I must stand up.
  2. All my emails are downloaded on my computer with isync. I can read them in Neomutt, search them very efficiently with Notmuch and reply. Thanks to Msmtp, mail sent are kept on my system.
  3. I browse the web and gemini while offline thanks to a browser I developped : https://offpunk.net
Offpunk also mark to download links I want to read which are not in my cache.
  4. When I stand up and connect, I launch a bash script called “do_the_internet.sh”. This will:
  • send emails in the Msmtp queue.
  • dowload new emails
  • dowload web pages marked to sync in Offpunk
  • dowload RSS feeds subscribed in Offpunk
  • git push/pull various git repositories, including my blog
  • force Tresorit file sync
I can then safely disconnect for the day.

I makes exceptions for projects that require online time, such as learning and configuring my Mudita Kompakt. That’s why I’m active now but expect my presence on this forum to become a lot less frequent once I go back offline.
