Files — Community App Review
Version: 0.1.1
Files is a file manager for the Kompakt, and for the drives on the servers at home.
It opens on a page of places rather than the top of a tree: recent files, Downloads, the phone and the SD card, folders you pin, and your servers.
- Long-press to choose, then copy, move, delete or share several at once.
- Copy or Move picks things up; go anywhere and Paste. A server is just another place, so a copy from the phone to a server is the same two presses.
- A file only takes its real name once all of it has arrived, so a copy that is stopped or fails leaves nothing half-written. Long copies carry on with the screen off.
- If a name is already taken it asks first: keep both, leave it out, or replace.
- Samba and Windows shares, as a guest or with a password; away from home, over Tailscale.
- Search by name, narrowed to documents, pictures, audio and so on. Sort by name, date, size or type, with chapter 2 before chapter 10.
- Info shows a file’s SHA-256 on request, to check a posted checksum on the phone.
- Tapping an APK installs it.
- Choose it once with Always and it stands in for the phone’s own file manager.
It needs “All files access”, which Android asks for on its own page, and the network only for the servers you add.
MonoFiles, reviewed here last week, is lighter and simpler, and worth a look if that suits you better.
What I have not tried is a Windows share, only Samba. If you have one, I would like to know whether it works.
