When I first got the Mudita Kompakt I was disappointed to learn that it used a front light. I was simmilarly disappointed with my Mudita Harmony for the same reason.
A front ligth defeats the purpose of epaper. reMarkable with theur first two versioins, the reMarkable 1 and 2 had no lights whatsoever anywhere on the products. That made them excellent. Unforuntinatly, they put a front light on the reMarkable Paper Pro, makeing a huge step backwards with that model. Then they got their act together again with the reMarkable Paper Pure (thier latest device).
Also, please remove all other lights. When the Mudita Kompakt is low on battery, a red LED light up. Please remove that! Just show an empty battery icon on the screen.
My second wish for the next version of both the Kompak, and the Harmony is that you put in a color eink display. Eink has the Spectra 6 now, their best color epapar so far. Would you be able to make a Kompakt and a Harmony using that display tech?
And thirdly, please make the Kompakt less bulky. If you could maybe look back at the iPhone 4 for inspiration. Make the next Kompakt model about that same size, and shape. That would be awesome!
So, in summary, please remove all lights! I would even be williing to pay extra for that. I beg you.
Use color eink, the Spectra 6.
Draw inspiration from the industrial design of the iPhone 4.
Color eink without a light doesn’t look that great imo. I’m a big fan of unlit b&w e-ink, but the extra layers involved in color just make the background too dark.
It’s pretty easy to set your Mudita Kompakt backlight to off if you don’t like using it.
Personally not a fan of colour e-ink, to me that’s just delving back into the realms of the standard smartphone. The backlight can be switched off but its good to have it there for those of us who need it!
The red light perhaps good to have option to switch off but its a good visual cue to charge device.
Thanks for sharing your feedback and explaining what you’d like to see in future devices!
On Mudita Kompakt, you can turn the front light off completely and disable adaptive screen lighting to keep the screen unlit. This lets you use the E Ink display with ambient light alone, while keeping lighting available for those who need it in darker surroundings.
Thank you, too, for your suggestions about the indicator LED, color E Ink, and a more compact design. We appreciate hearing what matters to you.
Thank you. Yes I know we can turn it off, and I do. But that’s not enough for me. I want it to be like the reMarkable 1, 2 and Paper Pure with absolutely no gap between the display and the surface of the device. For that, you need to remove the front light.
