The camera doesn’t seem to work in offline mode. I’m curious why it must be switched out of offline+ in order to function. I’d imagine the camera doesn’t use any connectivity, so I find this odd… Apologies if this has already been asked!
I think it’s because Mudita is selling Offline+ as a privacy feature.
A lot of people are still afraid that their cameras and microphones continue recording them even when you’re not using them. So this is like a way to disable all network connections, wifi, bluetooth, cameras and microphones in one click.
Ah I get it! Thank you. Well, I guess I like the way that it is, then! At first I found it strange…slightly jarring to need to turn it back on but that makes sense! It’s good to know that the camera doesn’t seem to function when you go offline, even when opening the app.
This is correct. The OFFLINE+ more is basically a software & hardware cut-off switch. It cuts off the microphone, camera & all all connections on the hardware & software level.
@urszula thanks for the response! I guess I—like I’d imagine all of us who chose the Mudita—haven’t been accustomed to such a function. I’ve only ever used phones with the WiFi and data off but I love how offline+ goes even further and turns all of the unnecessary stuff off. Very nice!
I just checked the voice recorder and noticed the same message. Comforting to see that the function works without a doubt!
Love this. We’ve known for at least a decade now that software can be used to record you while your device appears to be off.
@timonstera You can always put the phone in AIRPLANE mode & then the camera will work.
@urszula thanks for the tip! I’ll appreciate being able to do that too when I don’t mind having some possible level of connectivity! Love this simple but effective feature already! At the moment it’s kind of surreal to be using a phone for the first time that has a team behind it concerned with privacy rather than being so concerned with profit and not as much with the user of the technology. Excited to see how Mudita progresses ![]()
I often like to turn my phone off, it’s like creating some mental space, you can’t reach me. This is an old thing, people used to leave their home phones off the hook or unplug them. Can’t think of it off hand but it’s mentioned in songs from the 70’s. So I like to think of Offline+ is like turning your phone off, but faster, easier. Turning a smartphone off is just slightly slow, annoying, that one doesn’t want to casually.
I even remember pulling the battery out of my Nokia when having a very sensitive conversation, it was not a rational action, it doesn’t need to be. If something is emotionally difficult to speak about in general, it doesn’t help to have a telecommunication machine on you.
Related, I have never had any concern that the front facing camera on a phone is recording me, but I also have always covered front facing cameras with tape, and have even opened smartphones to remove the camera completely. I do not need any belief of hidden surveillance to justify that I do not feel comfortable with a camera pointed at my face.
I believe the expression of concern over privacy can be a justification of ones emotions. We do not need rational reason to justify that we are sensitive creatures. We should feel free to express that we simply do not like or feel comfortable with something, amongst the many who feel it necessary to pressure all of society to partake in their cybernetic lifestyles.
So I am very excited to be able to feel that my phone is off quickly, easily. It’ll mean that I can do that much more often. Wonderful feature, thank you Mudita.
Are you a writer? This is well articulated.
Oh thank you! I wish, I bartend and work odd jobs as little as I can so I can spend my time writing and playing music, ya know a starving artist beatnik in New York City. I appreciate you saying that, possibly I shouldn’t be as anti-internet as I am and publish online, as of now it just accumulates in piles of paper in my apartment.
So what you’re telling me is you are a writer, just not by trade
. You could also just publish physical books and ebooks in order to keep your time on the internet to a minimum. Self-publishing is a lot easier these days- and you could even use crowdsale platforms to fund things. Passive income, and the only thing you’d be managing online is the online listing and maybe an email address. Think about it!
I’m looking into this, thank you! I already publish music on streaming services, so you’re very right, why not writing as well.
