Camera App suggestions

Hi guys, I’m a filmmaker who will in the next year or two make a feature on gadgets and cameras specifically and want to as part of it, look at the extent to which gadgets are software bound. I had a little chat with a developer and they identified the sensor to be an OV8856-PB which for all its sins is not a good sensor, but on its spec sheet it can output 10-bit RGB RAW photos which would give a user greater flexibility to enhance a photo.

I know videos are likely to be difficult in any reasonable quality with this, but as black and white has a lower data rate, I wondered if it would be possible to build an app or enhance the existing built in camera app to get 10-bit Black and white RAW photos from the camera and maybe 1080x1080 black and white video? This would keep with the black and white theme and give more flexibility. Would Mudita be down to try and implement this or failing that someone else?

I’d love to chat, or if anyone has knowledge of camera apps specifically, would be great!

@jayjo Since no one else from the Mudita Community has responded, I will chime in
At the moment, advanced camera features like RAW output or alternative video pipelines aren’t on our current roadmap. The camera experience on Kompakt is intentionally kept simple, and expanding it in the way you describe would require deeper changes to the camera stack than we’re planning right now.

That said, we appreciate the perspective you’re bringing to the discussion, especially around how much modern hardware is shaped or limited by software. While we can’t commit to implementing this, we’re happy to have these kinds of conversations, and it’s valuable for us to hear how people imagine using the device in unconventional, creative ways.

If other community members have experience with camera apps, sensors, or similar experiments, we’d also love to see them jump in and share their thoughts.
