Iām āMudita-Adjacentā
Although I do not today own a Mudita cellphone or clock or watch, I have a feature phone, a simple alarm clock, and a GPS watch that cannot communicate with my feature phone.
How I Use This
āDistraction machinesā is my name now for smartphones. In contrast, my Mudita-adjacent approach has freed daily at least an extra hour of attention for the past four years.
- I run more.
- I read more.
- I socialize more.
- I people-watch more.
- I engage strangers more.
Put simply, I feel āin the worldā more.
I have learned a lot in this process of moving away from a smartphone. For example, why do I need wifi or mobile data all the time. It has been enough to connect for some minutes a few times week for driving directions or to download podcasts/music. I rarely check the weather anymore, I can observe or go outside. I thought not having email on-the-go might be inconvenient sometimes, but I havenāt missed it at all in two months. I spend less time online, I am less distracted, and I also seek less novelty, so this means I am more and more content with quiet (no music or podcasts playing). It has translated to more enjoyment in reading, more patience with the kids, more time practicing meditation. Itās not just the actual time you have gained but a certain liberation in the psyche.
So I am grateful to Mudita for having a product like the Kompakt.
I donāt miss the conveniences of a smartphone and I donāt ever want to go back to that way of living. Any āinconvenienceā that has come up has been small in comparison to what I have gained in return.
I couldnāt agree more! I never want to go back to a smartphone. My brief foray into smartphones was a waste of time! So many useless distractions that you simply donāt need. And even though I would prefer something like a Mudita Pure 2.0 because I prefer buttons to touchscreens, I am generally satisfied with the Kompakt because it not only radiates calm, but also gives me inner peace. I simply have so much more time for other things, more important things, like genuine contact with the people who are important to me, my hobbies such as restoring old things like bicycles or typewriters, drawing, reading, meditating, etc. I am simply much more in the moment and am glad that Mudita, starting with the Pure back then, has taken me away from my smartphone again. It was a path to minimalism and a more mindful life in the here and now.
I want to expand on this even more this year and solidify my routines. Sorting out even more, more minimalism, contacting my loved ones either in person or by phone, meaning fewer messages. And as often as possible, bring my mind back to the moment and take more control away from the āautopilotā that robs us of so many moments. Why do we say that time passes faster and faster as we get older? Because the āautopilotā takes over more and more things, and we are not consciously aware of them. A small example is the way to work. What do we still notice there? It runs but almost automatically. I notice this again and again when I walk the same route on foot and at a leisurely pace, for example when Iām on vacation. Itās incredible what you notice then, and what you otherwise miss every day.
