Here’s a quick list of some apps that might be worth side-loading, depending on each person’s needs of course, and on whether Kompakt’s OS is compatible:
ON1 camera, which shoots RAW photos – the question is, will RAW be possible with the Kompakt? It depends on how much of Android’s Camera2 API is supported.
You clicked the “Reply” link within my post instead of clicking the [Reply] pushbutton beneath the thread, so I had to assume that you were posting your question directly to me instead of to Mudita. Thanks.
I’d consider sideloading Signal and an e-mail client; if someone knows it could work, I’d buy Kompakts for both me and my wife.
Secondly, I’d love to get my online banking app (Moje ING) but they don’t publish .apk for downloading. I just sent them an inquiry, but perhaps there’s a chance for some sort of partnership campaign, @urszula ?
Otherwise it would be a matter of knowing my account balance or trying harder to switch back to using cash, but if it was possible, I’d feel this might be my ultimate phone.
[some tangent, but I don’t want to open a thread for this - please redirect me if there’s a suitable thread]
I just stumbled upon Kompakt and I love the idea, I see how much smartphones are impacting our household even though the kids don’t have ones, as well as my productivity. The easiest for me to deal with this is getting rid of it rather than trying to dumb it down.
I’ve already been struggling with different feature phones and dumbphones in the last several years but couldn’t find a quality product among vendors such as Nokia, CAT, or alike. Audio quality typically sucks, SMS text input logic is flawed, and with some of those you can find so many issues with the code, it’s just painful to imagine someone let this into the market. I had like three Nokias based on S30+ already and every time something else was wrong.
@buiosu Signal & Whatsapp work on Mudita Kompakt- I’ve sideloaded them & they are fine. I haven’t tried email & I don’t want to. I’m in front of the computer too much as it is.
As for banking apps- our our LiveStream with @Jose_Briones, our CEO @michalstasiuk talked about this & suggested that downloading Bank APKs from random sources is not really a good idea. We don’t plan on any partnerships like that (as of now) because if we chose one bank (like ING) why not others, like mBank or the many international banks all over the world. It’s a slippery slope. Personally, I’ve NEVER had a banking app on my phone & I never used my phone (the NFC feature) to pay for anything. I use my card & I’ve never had any issues. So, you don’t have to regress so much that you know have to use cash.
@urszula Agreed, e-mails don’t have to be on the phone. As for the banking app, it’s not a strong factor, just gotta get a good habit to know/check your account balance when planning to do some bigger shopping during the day. Also, being able to pay with BLIK was a failover option in case of forgetting wallet but I get it, don’t forget taking basic utilities when going outdoors, simple as.
Another thing re banking apps that appeared on my radar is apps like Revolut or Wise or alike, oftentimes web version capabilities are severely limited to what the app can do.
Hi @philmonge & welcome to the Mudita Community. We’re glad you’re here. @Jose_Briones did a video about sideloading- he was testing how third-party apps perform on Mudita Kompakt:
Since the phone has not officially been released, there’s not post as to how to do this.
I plan on sideloading whatsapp as my parents communicate that way (low/no cell coverage at their house) and there is also a family group chat with my siblings as well.
I’m also considering an email client for my business email. I don’t get alot of email, most clients self serve through online booking.
Yeah I agree with the banking apps, people managed their finances for years without smartphones, you don’t need to have a banking app on your phone especially one you have sideloaded. I also will NEVER being putting email on my phone, email is a productivity KILLER, people convince themselves that is productive but it is not, having it on your desktop this much better where you can more directly control how you engage with email, Email is a dopamine hit like any other time wasting app in my opinion
